Call for peace in the Holy Land

With the recent UN ceasefire resolution marking an important step forward, we now need to keep up the pressure to ensure we achieve a lasting peace for the region.

Will you write to the Foreign Secretary to demand the UK exerts every effort to ensure this new UN resolution leads to a permanent ceasefire?

This also means the UK must put an end to its ongoing approval of weapons, military equipment and technologies to Israel.

As Pope Francis has said, “To say ‘no’ to war means saying ‘no’ to weaponry.”

Dear Foreign Secretary,

I am writing as a supporter of Catholic aid agency CAFOD, which has worked across Israel, Gaza and the West Bank for decades. This has involved supporting Jewish, Muslim, Christian and secular groups who are working towards securing peace in the region, as well as providing support to meet people’s basic needs inside Gaza and the West Bank.

With over 30,000 people killed, and the UN warning of a famine in Northern Gaza, the recent passing of the UN resolution for a ceasefire has not come soon enough. 

We are pleased that the international community has finally taken positive steps on the path towards peace.

But if we are to realise the lasting peace the region so urgently needs, I urge you, as Foreign Secretary:

-	to work with international partners, both bilaterally and multilaterally, to ensure this resolution leads to a permanent ceasefire;
-	to work alongside the Business Secretary to cease granting licences for weapons and other military equipment to Israel;
-	to work with international partners to ensure aid can reach all those who so desperately need it.
