Time for the UK to lead at the Santa Marta Conference

In just a few weeks, the Colombian port of Santa Marta, a city long known for its coal exports, will host a truly historic moment: the first International Conference for a Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels.

This is an ambitious coalition of countries from both the global North and South getting together to map out a fair pathway to leave fossil fuels behind.

For those of us who have been campaigning for climate action for a long time, this is a huge opportunity to protect our common home — and one we cannot afford to let slip by.

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing to you regarding the upcoming First International Conference for the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, taking place in Santa Marta, Colombia, at the end of April.

As a CAFOD supporter, and someone who has long campaigned for climate action, I believe that this conference offers a vital space to map out a clear and fair pathway away from fossil fuel.

While this process runs alongside the formal UN framework, it doesn’t replace that work. Instead, it complements it by giving this crucial “coalition of the willing” the space to move faster and set benchmarks for the rest of the world to follow.

Your own comments describing this coalition as one that “cannot be swept under the carpet” offers real hope. Now, Santa Marta provides the moment to turn those words into leadership. This is why I am urging you to ensure that the UK Government:

·	Supports the ‘“coalition of the willing”’ in Santa Marta in their work to shape the COP30 fossil fuels transition roadmap, during and beyond the conference.

·	Plays a positive role in bringing about a truly just transition, so that communities in the Global South are not left to shoulder the financial consequences of a crisis they did little to cause.

This conference is a decisive opportunity for the UK to show the leadership the world urgently needs and I would be grateful to hear how the government plans to support the Santa Marta process and outcomes moving forward.
