Take action for COP30

The COP30 UN climate negotiations in Brazil from 10-21 November will be one of the most critical climate summits in years.

With over 93% of the most climate vulnerable countries also suffering a debt crisis, in this Jubilee year the UK must play a key role in pushing rich countries to unlock new sources of public finance for climate action - especially for those countries that are suffering a debt crisis too.

Dear Energy Secretary,

Ahead of COP30 in Belém, I am writing to urge the government to set out an ambitious UK negotiating position that truly reflects the urgent need for climate action.

As a CAFOD supporter, I am fully aware of the devastating impact that climate change has on communities in different parts of the world.

This COP30 in Brazil will be one of the most critical climate summits in recent years and, as such, is a huge opportunity to make a difference to those communities as well as to the future of our common home.

As a large emitter historically, I urge the UK government to demonstrate the credible global leadership it has committed to by:

- Contributing its fair share of grant-based, new and accessible climate finance to the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG).

- Ensuring a meaningful commitment from the developed countries to unlock new sources of public finance for climate action, including:

- Polluter-pays taxes so those who are disproportionately contributing to the climate crisis, such as fossil fuel profit levies, wealth and aviation, pay their fair share towards its solutions.
    - International financial systems reform that encourages multilateral development banks to unlock more grant-based climate finance through innovative measures.
    - Debt architecture reform to allow debt-distressed countries to finance climate action through debt cancellation, and new international legislative frameworks that support them to manage debt.

Globally we are witnessing a short-sighted pushback against climate action, so the UK must champion bold and urgent action at this COP30, more than ever before.
