Call for a ceasefire in the Holy Land

Thousands of people have been killed across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory as the region witnesses the deadliest days in recent history.

CAFOD unequivocally condemns this shocking killing and kidnapping of civilians.

But we know more violence is never the answer.

The scale of the Israeli government’s violent retaliation is causing more civilian deaths and injuries. The decision to withhold food, water and fuel from reaching the two million inhabitants of Gaza – half of whom are children – will inevitably lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.

Will you email the Foreign Secretary to urge the UK to play its part in upholding international law, ensuring humanitarian aid can reach people in need, and works with other world leaders to secure a lasting peace for the region?

Dear Foreign Secretary,

I am writing as a supporter of Catholic aid agency CAFOD, which has worked across Israel, Gaza and the West Bank for decades. This has involved supporting Jewish, Muslim, Christian and secular groups who are working towards securing peace in the region, as well as providing support to meet people’s basic needs inside Gaza and the West Bank.

I am deeply concerned by the latest escalation of violence in the region. The targeting of civilians in Israel by Hamas was a horrendous act and a clear breach of international law that must be condemned in the strongest terms. 

Israel’s right to self-defence must remain within the realms of international law. It cannot involve the killings of civilians, as we have witnessed in recent days. It also must not involve collective punishment by preventing food, water and fuel from reaching the two million people who live in Gaza – half of whom are children. 

This is leading to a humanitarian catastrophe, and children will pay the greatest price. 

I urge you, as Foreign Secretary, to work with international partners, both bilaterally and multilaterally, towards the following:

•	The immediate resumption of access to food, water, medical and fuel supplies to the population of Gaza, and ensure humanitarian aid can reach those in need;
•	The upholding of international law on both sides – meaning that civilians must not be targeted, hostages must be released and collective punishments of whole populations must never take place;
•	The urgent cessation of the current violence and progress towards a lasting peace in the region.
