Tell PM not to break climate cash promise

Rishi Sunak is reportedly preparing to break his promise that the UK will pay its fair share supporting people on the frontline of the climate crisis.

The UK made this climate pledge alongside other countries at the UN’s global climate talks.

But leaked documents suggest the government is now looking for ways to break its word, including by delaying spending despite it being needed more urgently than ever.

While our sisters and brothers worldwide are losing homes and livelihoods to climate catastrophes, fossil fuel companies are making hundreds of billions in record profits. That’s money that should be used to pay the bill for the climate emergency.

Will you demand Rishi Sunak sticks to our promise to stand by communities being hardest hit by the climate emergency?

Dear Prime Minister,

You’ve told the House of Commons that “keeping our promises on climate finance” is “central” to the UK’s efforts to tackle the climate emergency.

I agree. Providing financial support to countries on the frontline of the climate crisis – those that have done least to contribute to the crisis but who are being hardest hit – is not only necessary but a moral obligation as one of the world’s largest historic emitters.

I urge you to:

  1. Not break your promise to provide £11.6bn in international climate finance
  2. Urgently set out how and when you will meet this pledge
  3. Work with other countries in the run-up to COP28 to identify new ways of providing the money needed by communities on the frontline of the climate crisis, including utilising the record profits being made by fossil fuel companies
